Exotic Woods: For distinction, choose an exotic
Driwood recently completed a custom mantel which was seen by our client’s friend. The gentleman was impressed with the craftsmanship of our work. He was looking for someone to help design and build a room in his house. After meeting with him and showing him our walnut office he decided that walnut would make a perfect library in his own home.
He was thrilled with the finished product and has come back for some more renovations throughout the house. View images from this walnut room.
Go beyond poplar
Although poplar is suitable for stain work and the color can be matched to other species, it is impossible to match the grain texture, depth and figure that walnut, mahogany, cherry and other species naturally exhibit. That is the primary reason to choose an exotic species.
We can supply mouldings in an array of exotic woods: mahogany, walnut, cherry, cypress, maple, white oak, African padauk, sapele, ipe, redwood, basswood. To get a one of a kind look you have to start with one of a kind material.
Exotic wood period recreations are available
Also, true period recreations require the use of materials that would have been used at the time period. For instance, typical American Craftsman architecture and furniture relied heavily on the use of white oak.
Mahogany was relied upon in the Federal period. French Country stain work relied on Walnut. Driwood has a large footprint in the historical renovation sector. We have matched countless mouldings from historic homes across the country.
Our process is different because we trace the profiles by hand onto a template and hand cut and sand each template so that the finished product is not just an approximation of the moulding but that it is an exact match. We hand grind each knife to make sure there is perfect alignment with the original.
